田巻 真寛 / Shinkan Tamaki
見たことのないイメージと新しい知覚を探求し、映像制作とパフォーマンスを行うアーティスト。初期はフィルムの物質性に着目し、抽象と具象、イメージと音の狭間を行き交う作品を制作。近年は光と色の現象を観察するビデオ作品の他、ガラスやプリズムで即興的に光学現象を発生させるライブパフォーマンスも行っている。
ロッテルダム国際映画祭（オランダ）、メディアシティ映画祭（カナダ）、(S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico（スペイン）、クアラルンプール国際実験映画＆音楽祭（マレーシア）ほか、国内外で上映・パフォーマンスを発表。実験的な音と映像のイベントシリーズ「Sound Screening」主宰。栃木県鹿沼市で2022年にオープンしたオルタナティブスペース「Center」共同設立者、副センター長。

An artist exploring never-before-seen images and new perceptual experiences through filmmaking and performance. In his early work, he focused on the materiality of film, creating works that cross between abstract and concrete, sound and image. In recent years, he has expanded into video works observing phenomena of light and color, as well as live performances in which optical phenomena are generated improvisationally using glass and prisms.
His works have been presented at International Film Festival Rotterdam (Netherlands), Media City Film Festival (Canada), (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico (Spain), Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film, Video & Music Festival (Malaysia), and other venues both in Japan and abroad. Organizer of “Sound Screening,” an experimental sound and image event series. Co-founder and Vice Director of Center — an alternative space and hostel that opened in Kanuma, Tochigi in 2022.

Images do not live in this world but in the eye of the beholder. Perception is just the result of the human vision failures, and the way we educate our look. Shinkan Tamaki films are propelled from this idea as if from a trampoline, sometimes helped in their drive by the properties of the photochemical support, sometimes by the basic principles of light and color. High contrast, the distinction between figure and ground, folds, shadows, negative and positive image, traces and marks left by analog processes: these are some of Tamaki’s resources in his efforts to explore the latitude of film contrast thoroughly, and try the possibilities of the light spectrum. A stroll that breaks into a thousand pieces, the body of an animal that becomes an abstract choreography or a boat trip where sky and sea are exchanged and denatured are just some of the means to un-educate the eye that the films by Shinkan Tamaki provide, where everything can become nothing, and nothing the entire universe.
